Planting bulbs

Dear forum friends,
There has been quite a discussion about 'planting bulbs during the winter'.
I feel that too little emphasis has been put on the fact that planting
or tranplanting bulbs while growing or after an artificially prolonged
dormancy, very often leads to a disappointing performance, compared to
planting during their natural dormancy period. Wintergrowing bulbs such
as tulips, narcissis etc. need a long period underground to develop a
good rootsystem before emerging. Indeed, they may return back to normal
the following season, but there will be important losses.
For the best results 'respect natural growing cycle by planting during
the natural dormancy period' There are many summergrowing bulbs
species, which are naturally dormant during the winter, can be planted
from January until April.
Greetings from the south of France where have light frost and still
no rain since the end of Octobre.
