Hi Diane,
you probably don't know that I work at La Mortella, just came back
yesterday. Yes, that incredible woman is Susana, Lady Walton, and I can
assure you that meeting her is really fun (Sean can confirm). Well, sooner
or later we will land in the US, as we just started a major fund raising
campaign, and hope to involve American garden patrons. Then perhaps many of
you will have a chance to meet Susana and hear her talking about the
gardens. For those of you who are in England, be aware that 2002 is the
centennial year of Sir William Walton and during most of the celebration
festivals and concerts held in England Lady Walton will be a guest, in many
cases she will also perform Façade. Don't miss it if you can. She is really
special.
The photograph is that of Geranium maderense. You can check the garden's
website at http://www.ischia.it/mortella/, but I don't think there are
photos of the G.m. in its pages. Geranium maderense is one of the main
assets of the lower gardens in the Spring, with its bright color; it self
seeds everywhere and is really easily started from see
We had some strikes of cold weather on the island, but no major losses, as
the really delicate plants had been either covered or moved indoors. A
Colubrina arborescens seedling (Coffee colubrina) looks quite frozen, but
that seems the only real loss and however we have many colubrinas; as for
other plants, Petrea volubilis shows some burned leaves, the same goes for
Thumbergia misoriensis, but none of the palms and cycads collection
suffered.
At the moment we are actively getting ready to open the gardens to the
public in March, and the main activities are pruning and mulching.
All the best,
Alessandra
