Hi Everyone !
freshly subscribed to the list ,Diana Whitehead asked me to
write something about the garden.
Here it goes :
The Botanical Garden Westmaas is a small garden but expanding
regularly
in the southwestern part of The Netherlands , started in 1985 and moved to it's present location in 1989. The Garden is meant to show diversity of life in al it's
forms ,for educational
activities ,research and species conservation by means of ex situ cultivation. .Because of the relatively mild conditions here in the Meuse
(=Maas )-Delta,
and the North-Sea close by ,gives us the possibility to grow and experiment with plants from milder regions of the world. At present the garden is used for testing plant species
on hardiness
and for use for planting on a larger scale, de idea is to make a natural park (controlled)divided into geographical sections showing and protecting a widest variation of plants possible. Important collections in the garden are Medterranean
plants ,coastal
Californian plants and plants from the cooler areas of the Southern Hemisphere. The Garden is also home for the National Plant Collections of Cistus, Halimium, Genista,Cytisus. BOTANIC GARDEN WESTMAAS
