RE: garden diary software?

A local small nursery, now out of business due to the death of the owner, had every pot labelled with a barcode. When the one or two customers per day bought plants from the shed in the garden, the owner would use a barcode reader, print the bill of sale and presumably update his inventory control software. (I never queried him about the program, but perhaps he wrote it himself. This was 15 or 20 years ago.)
