soil and roses

My last two messages were really in reference to plants which have been
nursery-grown in very light mixtures. When it comes to roses, I don't amend
the soil at all. They love my black adobe, as do many other plants. But on
my unwatered slope, I just can't do without Salvia "Winnifred Gilman"
because of the wonderful scent of the leaves. If you have trouble with it,
try one of the hybrid substitutes. 'Allen Chickering' smells almost as
good, and is easier to grow, but is a lot bigger. Cathy
