Re: up market

I'm curious which magazines you might find "upmarket" and "downmarket".  I subscribe only to Horticulture now as I have just recently had to let Fine Gardening lapse.  I used to get AHS's TAG and at one time RHS's The Gardener.  An unexpected reduction in my income forced me to trim the excess and I'd rather have plants than magazines.  I occasionally get a look at American Nurseryman and New Plants (previously subscribed to both).  And I receive many catalogs that help me stay abreast of what's available.  A few online only catalogs like World Plants help me find some things not available elsewhere.   I receive some info from Sally Ferguson of new items on the market, this year it in cludes Tessalaar plants from Australia. Frankly, some of my best "finds" are obscure items in text-only catalogs like Arrowhead.

I don't buy as much for myself anymore but I am the buyer for our CES Display Gardens and nursery and we do like to look around for special plants. I've been putting together a presentation of new plants for the meeting next week to encourage the Master Gardeners to broaden their selections.

I, for one, am interested in anything that keeps me "in-the-know".    I do a lot of desk work but I am also a member of the dirty-fingernail set.  Actually, I'm often in it up to my elbows.

As a reader of some glossies as well as any other source of gardening lore [including this one !] I think this is a bit mean, and nothing to do with muck up fingernails. [Does he mean that  readers of the"downmarket" mags have dirty fingernails?]  Could it be that we are not so easily swayed by what journalists tell us . Perhaps we have a "Master Plan", or ideas of our own, or read some of the respected writers of gardening books and spend time reflecting etc etc ?  Maybe all our spare cash has gone on same glossies and there is none left for spontaneous plant buying. [That's not very convincing is it ?]
Nonetheless well done for the rant. Good stuff. Happy New Year.
Jennifer.
