Thanks for the thanks to our fire fighters. BUT!!! Our Forest Service hasn't pushed the "Smokey the Bear" button for quite awhile. They have finally tumbled to the fact that preventing forest fires may be counter productive. Fire is a natural part of the forest ecology. When fires are prevented, it is always temporary. Sooner or later there will be a fire and then, with several decades of brush present, the fire is so intense and so hot that it kills the trees and that forest is ruined. If the fire goes often enough the fuel load is relatively low and the fire races through without killing the trees and a year later everything is almost back to normal. But with long intervals and lots of fuel, you wind up with a kind of desert! They still put out the fires because California has a bunch of idiots that go out in the forest and build a house of flammable materials and they don't clear for 200 feet around. They like the big beautiful trees. Then they stand several miles away and wring their hand when those trees catch fire and burn their house. Then the insurance companies re-insure them when they re-build. And the government gives them loans (grants) to re-build in the same place. When I get to be dictator they will not get insurance for buildings built in fire prone forests or under sand cliffs that are ready to collapse. And if the mistake is made and they are built, they will not be allowed to re-build in the same stupid place! They build there in the first place because they get a "good deal" on the land without wondering why the price was so low! I once did an archaeological survey for a piece of property along the ocean. It was about 200 feet wide and a half mile deep. Where did he build? Within fifty feet of the ocean on a non-rock cliff! One of these days he will will be on TV, wringing his hands, and demanding money to rebuild when his home slides into the ocean. And the insurance companies will raise everybody's rates to pay for these stupidities. Ugh!!! ---Chas--- ====================================
