Eleutherococcus sieboldianus varietatus

While looking up plants for dry shade under pines, I ran into this plant in Sunset for the umpteenth time:

Eleutherococcus sieboldianus variegatus  (rich or poor soil, any exposure, any amount of irrigation, 6-8? tall and wide)

Does anyone have experience with it in the California Bay Area? Is it as lovely as it sounds? In shade is it compact or rangy? Is there one in a nearby public garden that I could see growing?
