Janet, potential root damage for five different species of yucca is rated as "Low" by the Urban Forest Ecosystems Institute.  Your friends' yucca shouldn't be a problem.  Even so, he could propagate a pup just in case at some point, he has to lose the mother plant.  Or, to have more than one!
