Jim said ....[in So. Cal. ] We cannot gorw Peonies but than
there is no snow on the ground either.
I'm courious about other members experience with Paeonia (?)
in Medit. climates. At our previous house, about 3 km so
of the so. tip of the San Francisco bay, in Sunnyvale,
Paeonies grow quite well, though they tend to look a bit
ratty in fall. The area is supposedly on the border between
UC zones 15 and 17, but thick, crusty frost is common
in December and January, very typical of 15, i think.
The soil is meters upon meters of adobe, the topsoil
on which is almost jet-black.
I was growing varieties Leda and Haephestus (spelling
uncertain); got some very beautiful blooms.
We're now living in UC zone 16, and in two winters i
haven't seen a frost. Should i not attempt paeonies?
I think Sunset Western Garden Book says no, but
they are not omniscient.
