>This was just published in the Avant Gardener. I've paraphrased from a
three paragraph article:
About 40 species of Curcuma, all rhizomatous plants from tropical Asia, are
known. Almost a dozen of these ... are currently sold by Louisiana Nursery
(Route 7, Box 43, Opelousas, Louisiana 70570, $4 catalog).
They grow from 1' to 3' or taller, with bracted flowers resembling tuplics
and ranging from white and yellow through red and green. The very bright
flowers - Curcuma is a genus of the ginger family - are borne above dark
green, often striped, lance leaves.
Now a nursery is introducing C. alismatifolia, the Siam or summer tulip.
This species is described by Stokes Tropicals (Box 9868, New Iberia,
Louisiana 70562) as "a great new landscape flower" as well as an excellent
cut flower and pot plant.
The rhizomes are planted after last frost, begin to bloom in6 to 8 weeks,
and continue flowering into the fall, then are dug and stored like other
summer bulbs.
(End of paraphrase)
I've subscribed to The Avant Gardener for many years, and I think that many
gardeners on this list would find it a valuable newsletter to read. You can
learn more about it at http://trine.com/GardenNet/AvantGardener/avantg.htm
I also searched for Curcuma via AltaVista and found the following:
http://www.brudys-exotics.com/gingers3.html,
http://www.glasshouseworks.com/collect.html,
http://www.s-p-h.com/sections-n/gingers/gingers.html (this latter URL has
links to some pictures of Curcumas).
I hope this helps!
