No worries Phil, the last two summers here have been extremely dry no
rain at all for 4 months one summer, and nearly 5 months the other. This
is not normal but what rain we do get over summer, in Perth, is usually
very little and generally ineffectual. It actually causes more harm than
good as people think they can turn off thier irrigation for a few days
and then wonder why a few plants die!
Thats why I only water my natives for the first summer to help them
through then no more!
I have lost a couple but I put that down to dog damage!
I usually plant at the start of winter and start watering towards the
start of summer and only every 3 or 4 days for about 15 mins with 100
Litre an hour drippers (the sort that are adjustable). The garden was
started in 1988 and was looking good until 1990 when the local shire put
an drainage easement down the side of the property and ripped out most
of the native garden in the process, 55 m long by 10 m wide ($1000
compensation and we had to haggle!!!)
They replanted a lot of the trees but they all died as native trees
don't take kindly to that sort of treatment.
Now the garden looks great and none of the natives are irrigated over
summer.
We have a few non natives selected for thier hardieness, Carobs etc and
I have a weakness for Palms which I mulch heavily for the summers and
water!
We also have some Pawlonias for thier spectacular flowers and summer
shade.
