Dear Medit-planters in USA,
The following letter was posted to Alpine-L and I suggested to Dr.Rejon that
he might
get some assistance from this group. He has written asking me to post the
letter here.
Hoping someone can provide some information,
Jane

-------------------
May we introduce ourselves. We are a genetic research group from the
University of Granada (Spain) working on the chromosome analysis of lily
plants. At this moment, we are interested in gaining information about a
European Mediterranean plant, Muscari comosum (tassel hyacinth) which invaded
the USA early in this century. This fact was documented by Long (1922;
Muscari comosum a new introduction found in Philadelphia. Rhodora
24[277]:16-20) and by Nelson (1922;Muscari comosum in Oregon. Rhodora
24[286]:208-210). This plant was apparently introduced by Greek and/or
Italian settlers who used the bulb as food.
Would you be able to help us answer the following questions:
1) Is Muscari comosum still living in the wild in the USA? If so, where?
2) How could we obtain bulbs from as many populations as possible for
genetic analysis?
In the event that you do not have information on this plant, could you
advise us on what steps to take in this effort?
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Manuel Ruiz Rejon.
