If the deadline for submittal of suggestions has not yet closed then the
spec. for fruiting street-trees set by Cyndi:

> >        - 8-25 feet tall (10-15 feet is best)
> >        - appropriate for use as a street tree (no damage to sidewalk from

> >        - edible fruit or nuts
> >        - climate adapted; no watering after the first year
> >        - minimum litter, no sap (a quick fall leaf drop is okay)

might be met by the Pineapple Guava, Feijoa sellowiana. I know of somebody
in Oakland who has planted several for this purpose.
