Pomegranates as street trees?

Cyndi I've seen pomegranate shaped into a tree right here in West Los
   Angeles in someone's front yard.

Really? Cool. I'm planning on planting a pomegranate anyway. If I can't
find one at the Rare Fruit plant exchange next week I am going to ask a
friend of mine near San Jose for a cutting of hers (the fruits are
incredible).

I know they meet my desires for no water, low mess, yumminess, and height.
The question now is the roots and overall shape. Will it be appropriate as
a street tree? Sunset implies that the plant will shape itself to your
pruning, so that's a good sign. The Manual of Tropical and Subtropical
Fruits talks about the many suckers coming from the roots. That would
imply shallow, spreading roots which would not work well.

Does anyone know?

Cyndi
