Has anyone grown E. caesia (I hear it's a bit tender), E. rubida or E.
glaucescens?"

Vanessa, it all depends where you live. There are at least 500 species to
pick from. Rod has recommended a few West Australians. I am guessing you
are a bit concerned sabout cold hardiness as the other two species you
asked about (E. rubida and E. glaucescens) both come from the higher
mountain areas. If E. caesia is a bit tender in your area but E. niphophila
is not I'll suggest a few from the Tasmanian and Victorian areas of
Australia.
A favorite of mine is E. amygdalina. Tall and elegant, with long, pendulous
leaves and clean bark, it looks great against a blue sky when the wind
blows. Another is E. pauciflora. Some forms that are hard to get have a
brown markings that come through. Your E. niphophila is really a form of E.
pauciflora. There is another one that develops a curved, pendulous form and
has brilliant white bark.
None of these easterns have the beautiful flowers that the west Australian
species display but they do have great forms.
Is cold hardiness your problem?
