I'll put in one more plug for another attractive Euc here
as David mentions E. rhodantha is very hard to get
another species that is very similar and worth a try is E. macrocarpa
E. rhodantha was at one time considered a hybrid of E. macrocarpa x
pyriformis
it now has its more rightfull place, in my view, as a separate if
somewhat variable species.
The fruits are generally a little smaller than E. macrocarpa but both
species have the blue tinged leaves and attractive bushy habits.
I couldn't agree more with the comments about the timber species of
Eucalyptus going weedy
They are already going feral in parts of Europe and I can't understand
why Tasmanian blue gum. Its only good for paper, no use at all for
cabinet or structural timber and thats were the real money in wood is!
The tall timber down on the south coast here includes some of the
biggest trees in the world and in a very small region of just a few
thousand square kilometres and they grow nowhere else. Some of the most
impressive would be the E. jacksonii, red tingle, these have been
measured at up to 20 m in girth, and up to 60 m height!
I know there are taller trees around but these guys are great! There is
one down south that had a fire in the base many years ago and it got a
bit hollowed out, still alive mind, you could park a four wheel drive in
it!
They wouldn't let you now though :-)
