Dear friends -
This is a site specific note for Northern California folk. Below is an
excerpt from a Mediterranean Garden Society (for No. Calif. members) that
I have just mailed out - I thought some of you might be interested to
know what's going on.

Future MGS events & activities
The first meeting of the northern California members of the Mediterranean
Garden Society was held September 28th, 1998,at Tilden Park Botanic Gardens
in Berkeley (for more about that eventful meeting, see page 2)
There was general interest expressed during that gathering in holding
future, periodic meetings, and Bill Grant, President of the Friends of the
UC Santa Cruz Arboretum Associates, agreed to host the next meeting at the
Arboretum (see below). Bill has also offered to help in hosting MGS
members coming from significant distances, if needed.
Not to be outdone, Warren Roberts also volunteered the UC Davis Arboretum
and this will be the site of our spring meeting on April 24 (look for more
information in the spring newsletter).
These varied locations fit into the 'traveling show's scheme suggested by
many of the attendees at the first meeting, with the idea to spread the
word and help increase our membership base before working towards
organizing into an official 'chapter'. Seán O'Hara agreed to produce this
quarterly newsletter during this time period. Members interested in
assuming organizing roles within a northern California chapter of the MGS
are encourage to step forward!
If you know of other sites that might be willing to host MGS events, please
let us know. Combining such a meeting with a garden tour or talk is
desirable, so we are willing to conform to an existing schedule or format.
If the members know of public or private gardens in their areas, which
might be of interest, let's talk about arranging tours.
For any of the above, or for information in general, please contact Seán
O'Hara at (510) 987-0577) or sean.ohara@poboxes.com.
A Winter 1998/99 MGS meeting
This next meeting, coupled with Peter Dallman's talk and slide lecture
about his newly published book, Plant Life in the World's Mediterranean
Climates, will take place on Saturday, January 23rd, at 5pm, at the UC
Santa Cruz Arboretum. The Arboretum Manager, Brett Hall, will lead a tour
of the Arboretum (weather permitting) starting at 2pm, followed by a brief
MGS meeting at 5pm. Attendees of the Arboretum tour & meeting are welcome
to stay for a potluck dinner at 6pm followed by Peter Dallman's talk. For
directions to the UCSC Arboretum, call (831) 427-2998.
If you'd like to make a whole day of it, perhaps you'd like to stop by
Sierra Azul Nursery in Watsonville to see their well-known garden of
mediterranean climate plants, run by Jeff Rosendale, who is also a member
of the MGS.
Those interested in knowing more about the Mediterranean Garden Society and
its activities in Northern California are encouraged to come, or to contact
Seán A. O'Hara at (510) 987-0577 or sean.ohara@poboxes.com.
