Re: "Conditioning" cut flowers
Flower arrangers do this all the time. We re-cut stems of plant material
we require for decoration, exhibit or whatever underwater so an air-lock
does not develop in the stem. Some materials, generally foliage early
in the season, will 'hold' if it has spent some time totally submerged
in coolish water- flowers don't like this treatment, but roses really
appreciate being submerged right up to the petals. hostas will
condition in June if submerged for 3- 5 hours, wilt almost immediately
if just re-cut underwater. this is in zone 8, southern BC, Canada.
