Hi Nan
According to my NZ Flora  D.australis is an ancient synonym of Cordyline
australis, our common Cabbage Tree. It is in fact the name given to this
plant in in 1786 by the botanist Forster, who I think I am correct in
saying sailed with Capt Cook on one of his voyages to this country. 

Cordylines are in fact the suuthern counterpart of the Old World
Draecenas which they do resemble quite closely.
