in my case I am absolutely convinced that they disturb the
mulch to eat cutworms.
my soil is so bad i didnīt have any worms for a long
time.
yet I had an abundant supply of cutworms driving me to despair
sometimes.
a blackbird appeared one winter and started scracthing the
mulch making a real mess.
a succession of blackbirds followed, only to be murdered by
the cat one after another. I could clearly notice that the periods when I was
blackbirdless, cutworm damage was vastly worse.
my efforts to "always " keep water available for
blackbirds and the aging of my cat have paid off and now I have blackbirds
in residence all year. I watch with great satisfacction the results of their
scratching for I know that where there is scratched mulch there was a cutworm
.
interestingly enough, they havenīt touched the strawberries..
my new puppy eats them delicately without harming the plants!
need to dognet them
