I know how easy that was. My little rose cutting is doing well. I potted
it up and while it has two leaves out, a third is starting to unfold. A
few of the buds along the stem are starting to come out of dormancy as
well.

I'd think this was the easiest method than trying to keep the old rose. At
least this way you can transplant the new rose bush to an area that is
much more suitable, and with better soil, etc.
