This is almost entirely what I do. I am a member of the North American Rock
Garden Society, but my climate is much too hot and arid to grow many
"classic" rock garden plants. Especially as I do not irrigate much. One by
one, all of my "normal" gardens are being replaced with rock gardens, and
mediterranean plants predominate.
Thymes, small rosemaries and lavenders. Erodiums have been a special
treasure. Oregano, and small grasses. Miniature hypericums of the tough
variety, and a number of California natives. (Penstemons and eriogonums
being a special favorite.)
Every year I experiment with a few new treats-- Sideritis, aethionemas,
dianthus sp.
And almost every year, it is the med plants that are successful and can
handle the rigors of my climate and gardening style (or lack thereof.)

Now if I just kill all the gophers.
