Hi All.
We've recently been passed a young plant of
Trochetiopsis, aka 'Marias' from the island of St. Helena, by
another warm-temperate garden here in Cornwall. I'm not sure if St. Helena
strictly qualifies as a Mediterranean zone but I'm keen to fish for some
advice, particularly given that Trochetiopsis has had a rather difficult
past in the wild, let alone in cultivation and was only rediscovered in the wild
circa 1970. If anyone can advise as to probable soil conditions and general
cultural methods I'd very grateful, I'm keen not to waste the
prospects of a treasured species. Temperatures rarely pass below freezing here,
but humidity can be something of a problem
As a follow up to a previous enquiry about Carissa
macrocarpa, just to report that the spring planted specimen has flowered and is
forming fruit and that the established plant that was presumed drowned by last
fall/winters rain has returned to life vigorously (seemingly appreciative of
liquid seaweed feed). Thanks to all that responded to that post.
kind regards,
Mark Brent, Lamorran House Gardens, Cornwall,
England.
