Paul,
Although it can be seen growing in habitat in
southeast Asia in full hot sun and tolerating several
months long dry seasons(4 to 6 months) which are also
hot, I have never seen one planted in anything close
to these conditions here in California. In a more
northerly climate such as England, I suspect that full
sun would do no harm, and would be more concerned
about keeping the roots dry with sharp drainage to
avoid rotting in your winter wet. Here in the SF Bay
Area, it is more often grown in full sun in more
coastal situations, and more shade inland. It will
take full hot sun with more humid conditions, as I
have seen it in Los Angeles.
I'd suggest that this may best be grown as a movable
container plant, which was the only way it is used in
Seattle, similarly with Cussonia's that far north.
(Probably more realistic given the distinct
possibilities of freezes severe enough to do major
damage...) Of the three, I'd try only the Cussonia
paniculata outdoors in the ground, and then only if I
had a backup containerized plant indoors for the
winter, in your climate.
