RE: VIRUS PREVENTION

For anyone interested in protecting themselves from viruses that come via
email, this weeks Internet Tourbus (nci) gives easy rules and explanations.

Anti virus programs like Norton and McAfee will also generally protect if
updated regularly though there is always the possibility of infection
between the time the virus is first sent out and a protective program
created and then downloaded into your computer. Also make sure your email
program is set to not automatically open attachments.

My brother, who is knowledgeable in this area suggests the following:

If your computer is connected to the internet for long periods, it would be
a good idea to set up your own personal "firewall" to protect yourself from
hackers. You can download an excellent one (that I and many people I know
use). It's called ZoneAlarm, and is free for personal use by clicking
"ZoneAlarm Free Download" at http://www.zonealarm.com.

Something else: many programs that are "free" on the net actually put other
little things on your machine. These little items take note of things on
your machine and of where you go on the net, and then send the stuff
(secretly) to sites that gather the info for advertising. You can get rid of
them harmlessly by downloading and installing (and then *occasionally*
running) a program called Ad-Aware, that's freely available at
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/.

Best wishes and safe computing
