Hi all
This plant is growing behind an old house in Quincy, CA. It is very
close to the house and has been hacked back for many years, maybe 30
or more. It is deciduous, woody, vine-like but the "pruning"
technique might have caused a vertical growth that could otherwise be
shrub-like. I came along in late June, just after blooming, with no
flowers left. The leaves are opposite, divided into three parts. The
center part twice the size of the two side parts, ovate, pointed,
evenly serrate, each of three parts. Nice medium-dark green. The
surface is smooth with no shine. I may have to wait for the flowers
next year. All I could tell is that they were small, not showy, and
dried to small bits that fell off. This is zone 3.
We are perhaps borderline mediterranean-almost no rain in summer and
fall, like on the coast. It is hotter here than on the coast but our
cool hot cycle in summer is caused by the winds from the delta and the
San Francisco Bay area. We are in a 3300ft valley surrounded by
5-7,000 foot mountains..we are connected to the central valley by the
Feather River Canyon which funnels east wind. If the wind comes from
the east it is desert. Across one low pass and a jumble of
mountains,to the east is Sierra Valley-high desert.
I hope this is understandable. I have not written a plant description
in a long time and have forgotten some of the words.
Thanks
