Barbara and all,
The only two Lilies I've had long term success with
in Oakland (in gardens with our neutral pH,flatland clay-not the giant bonsai
which is the Roof Garden)are Lilium candidum and L.regale, and hybrids with
either as one of the parents, planted in
mostly shade in areas of improved drainage and given
weekly waterings in summer. These grew and flowered well for me
for many years.(I have moved from that house so I don't know if they still are)
I also have found that the hybrids sold as "Asiatic" and "Oriental" Lilies are
weak here
in terms of longevity and I suspect that it is a combination of their being bred
for color variations rather than for strength of the plant, and of our conditions
being wrong for them.
