Look at Thomas Church, early Lawrence Halprin, Garrett
Eckbo, early Sasaki Walker and Associates, and perhaps
the greatest, Roberto Burle Marx. Also, Jean Canneel
(Belgian modernist) and Burton Associates (in SD:
Neurosciences Institute, La Jolla). As I recall, the
Eameses seem to have had lots of plants inside and
outside their house in LA, so horticultural austerity
was not de rigueur among all those modernistas.
I would argue not to try to match the 50's look
exactly.
