Could it possibly be Calycanthus occidentalis?

Yes, that very well might be it. I remembered the flower petals as more
twisted than that picture, but that could be a variation or my bad memory
(I took a cutting but the flower is too dried up to tell).
Looking it up in the Sunset Western Garden book..."seeds can produce
convulsions." That can't be good. It is indeed a native plant.
C. occidentalis is called "Spice Bush." And it does have the aroma
described.
I am glad to see that it takes "regular" water because that means I can
have a much wider range of plants to choose from if I live there for the
parts of my garden I do not want to provide supplemental water to.
Thanks for your help!
Cyndi
