Dear Echinacea lovers,
Here in El Cerrito (California), snails and slugs are very much a problem.
They especially like Echinacea. I hunt them at night, and bait them, but it
is a constant struggle to control them.
The question of drought tolerance in Echinacea has come up. Here in El
Cerrito it needs Summer water. I have had the best luck growing my plants
in raised beds and other areas which drain well. Phytophera is a problem
here when the soil is warm, and it decimates plants in areas that do not
drain well.
Despite the problems growing Echinacea here in my neck of the woods, I find
it worth while. I am currently trying to grow Echinacea paradoxa, a yellow
flowering species. Does anyone know anything about this plant?
Regards, Tim Kalman
