Echinacea is very difficult from seed unless it is absolutely fresh, the
only answer is to buy some plants and harvest your own, then you will
get more seedlings than you will know what to do with.
On Richard's predatory ducks, we once had some conservation-orientated
neighbours who religiously collected all their slugs and snails each
evening and brought them round for our ducks the next day. The problem
was that if the ducks didn't accomplish a hundred per cent clean up
rate, this did more harm than good and in any case the ducks' great big
flat feet splatted everything on which they trod. So when the girl
friend who owned the ducks went on her way, they weren't replaced and on
balance, the plants are much better for it. However, now we get invaded
by wild ducks who devour all the tadpoles which would have grown up into
pest-eating frogs. Nature isn't always grateful for a helping hand!
