Saving the young plants.
Several years ago I kept losing beans as they came up. I covered the rows with dried weeds that had been cut around the edges of the garden. I piled the dry stuff loosely about 1 foot high and wide on top of the rows and waited until the beans grew up into the dried stuff before removing it. That method worked wonderfully. The ground remained damp and shaded and the birds did not try sticking their heads into the pickie dry stuff. I have used this method since then. The only problem I encountered is that I don't always have the proper dry, weeds available.
