Barbara,

I have a similar area in my yard, although it may get more sun than yours,
and we are much hotter than you.
You might consider Erigeron karvinskianus and Ceratostigma plumbaginoides.
These will both bloom with considerable shade, but can take the sun and dry
soil.
 How about coral bells?  They bloom in my area with the Pacific Coast Iris
and look lovely with them.
