I find the need to cut back foliage entirely dependent on weather &
following watering conditions. Given a good wet, cool, winter here, with
inter rain waterings as required, its not necessary to defoliate at all &
the plants will establish & grow straight on. Come summer heat, unless you
can keep them well hydrated, cutting back the leaves is a must.
