Just a slight clarification:Barry
We get sea winds, but we're about 2 miles from the shore, so salt spray is not an issue at all. It's just that we have nothing to block the wind (so much so my town has a "festival of the wind" because we get so much of it.
I only just got round to answering this. From my experience you might have at least some slight saltiness in the wind without being aware of it. We live about ten miles from our local open coast and about 5 from Wellington harbour (but this is over a range of hills) but in exceptional storms, with the wind blowing straight inland we have had definite and quite undoubted salt damage'
I would guess if it was also hot weather even a little salt in the wind could encourage burning of leaf tissue and occasional washing off would perhaps help protect the foliage..
I was amused by the idea of a festival of wind, certainly a case of "if you can't beat 'em join 'em". I can't imagine Wellingtonians ever celebrating wind, we mostly just endure it or occasionally curse it!
