Hi people,
Greetings again from the Algarve ( 25'C / 77'F at
10.00 this morning).
Thanks to you for your suggestions for a plant in a
pot to cover a wooden post in windy position.
David suggested a columnar Euphorbia or Cereus
peruviana. I am definitely going to get one or more Euphorbia for other parts of
the garden. Any of the Cereus I have seen are rather too spiny for the location
next to our sitting area ( but it would stop our dog and grandson taking a short
cut!!).
Nan suggested Hylocereus undatus, and I think I
will go with this, but the problem may be getting a plant. I have seen one in a
park near here, but I don't recall one in any of our local nurseries. Our
nurseries are good for normal/ popular plants, but pretty useless if you are
looking for something slightly unusual.
Margaret suggested Kennedia nigricans. I had not
heard of this plant before and looked it up on the web. It looks like a very
interesting genus and I am definitely going to get some seed and try out perhaps
K nigricans and K rubicunda elsewhere in the garden.
Finally thanks to Christine for suggesting
"drywater" gel as a way of overcoming watering problems. Unfortunately,
this product is not available here. My experience with other gel products has
been that they are expensive for limited benefit.
Thanks again everyone,
Happy growing,
Brian O.
