Not really. There are lots of A. melanoxylon growing around town here
in pure sand (almost beach sand), and they receive no supplemental
water, and they grow just fine. They are pretty breakage prone, but
I've seen a very large one that had been abandoned for 12 years that
is huge and has big branches and no splitting.
