The best Lavenders for my rocky dry Pine (Pinus halepensis) laden Costa
Blanca garden here are L.dentata (which indeed I thought was the Spanish
lavender!). I cut them back into the old wood below a small sprout and they
come away very well. I was always told in England never to cut into the old
wood but my Spanish gardener did not agree and he is right. My pruning is
always very successful. I planted some L.angustifolia and another hybrid
this year but I am not sure how I am going to treat these yet.

Speaking of lavenders, I've nearly given up on planting lavenders.
They grow for a while, then get really woody and split down the
middle. The ones that do best for me are the L. stoechas (spanish
lavenders).
How does everyone else do with lavenders? Which species/varieties do
you find do best in your garden? How do you keep the English and
French lavenders from growing overly woody and splitting?
