This just in from one of my readers.  Anyone care to venture a guess as to what is eating her cordyline?

Dear Nan,
I read your article on cordyline in the March 14, 2009 LA Times.  I've been meaning to write you ever since. I love cordyline and was heartbroken last year when every single plant was mauled by some critter that feasted on the starchy main stalk.  The nightly attacks (always at night) began in June and lasted about three months.  The plants were completely ruined in no time. I was wondering if you have any idea which nocturnal marauder is to blame.  I am so curious and could never catch the varmint in the act.
Thank you!
Annette
