I haven't seen an in-ground pool converted, but I saw above-ground pools used for cisterns. This was on a sloping wooded property on San Juan Island. The house was on the shore, with the pool buildings above on the slope. Each pool was in a building with a cedar shake roof with gutters that fed rainwater into the pool.
I imagine it was to provide water in case of fire, as many of the San Juan/Gulf Islands have little water.
