Thanks for the prompt reply Anthony.
Bought a bunch in the local market and stuck it in what I thought was a mug of water. It thrived and when I eventually looked I had found I had put it in the remains of a cup of green tea [organic of course !] 
Wondered if I had found a miracle rooting compound, but by the looks of it, I have not.
