A comment on the "when to water issue"

I planted [well others dug the hole and moved the small tree !] a cedar early this spring. It appears to be thriving. My native born local gardening friend  came to give it some water during a very hot dry spell as a knee injury prevented me from carrying heavy weights.
It was late afternoon, and he said we should not water it more [ 2 large buckets full] as the shock of the cold water from the tap could be dangerous for it. It seems unlikely after the water has filtered through the soil, however after reading mail from all the experts I realise I know so little...any comments ?
