Deborah,
To read how it is planned to treat the name "Sambucus mexicana" in the
forthcoming 2nd edition of the Jepson Manual go here:
http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/get_cpn.pl?43127&expand=1
Assuming I can understand the editorial comments, it appears that
Sambucus mexicana is being treated as a synonym for Sambucus nigra L.
subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli, which does not occur in California.
Plants in California formerly named as Sambucus mexicana belong
instead to Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea Bolli.
The genus Sambucus has been moved to Adoxaceae from Caprifoliaceae but
could be moved back according to unabridged comments in the draft text
for TJM2.
If we could only stop the march of science we could put an end to all
this wobbling back and forth.
HTH,
Tom

tree I know as Sambucus mexicana?? I haven't been keeping up with
