My garden is not entirely "by natural cycles" because if I let it depend entirely on rain, it would be rather dry and the plants stunted. I deal with sandy soil (a bit acidic from what I've read), so, plants can go dry and even end up dessicating too much if the roots haven't gone deep enough (I've lost a number of saplings because I didn't keep up on watering them until they were a couple of years old). I generally give everything a little water at least once a month in Summer. Of course, I live in a far more gentle climate than you do (near Monterey and we tend to get more fog than Monterey does), so things are different here, but I still would give things some supplemental water so they don't go drought deciduous. While I would love to let things go entirely natural, I know that it's not entirely realistic here (land was scraped down in the 60's when they built the subdivision), and I still want plants looking good.
