Where I live, A. longifolia does this... frequently, or even entire halves of the tree. There was one rather large, mature tree at the school up the street and after one rather tepid wind storm here, it lost an entire half of its crown. Over the years it continued losing branches until the school had it removed.
Personally, I really don't like any of the Acacias with phyllodes. I much prefer those with feathery leaves.
