Following on from Ben's question on habitability, it's sad that we'll never get to see all the gardens mentioned by people. Being there is the thing, and books and films are never the same. But I still thought it might be interesting to know the answers to this question.
What films or DVDs on gardens would you recommend and why?We had a lovely television series here a year or so ago, 'Around the World in 80 Gardens', chosen and presented by Monty Don, who's a gardener, garden writer and TV garden presenter. His background was in jewellery design before he got into gardens, and he's now President of the Soil Association, the main UK organic farming organisation, so an interesting guy. It was an excellent series. I assume it might be available on DVD, but I taped it so I haven't even looked.
One of the best things I've seen on Mediterranean landscapes, though not gardens, was another BBC programme in their Natural World series, 'Cork - Forest in a Bottle' (narrated by Monty Don, actually!) about the cork oak montado landscape of Portugal. Stunningly beautiful as well as great for growing cork and food, and superb for protecting soil and water and wildlife. Sadly still not available as a DVD last time I checked, but there are versions on YouTube.
