Re: Hymenosporum flavum - Sweetshade from Australia

Carol and Sean,

I?m late weighing in on this but thought you?d like to know that there are at least 6 other Hymenosporum flavum trees in Mountain View. They?re at the corner of Phyllis and El Camino Real planted in a strip about 8 ft deep between the sidewalk and the east facing wall of an auto repair shop. They?ve been growing there for at least 40 years, receive absolutely no care or irrigation and look great. Their fragrance is still very strong right now even though the flowers look pretty much done. This part of Mountain View is Sunset zone 15 and the native soil is young alluvial soil brought down from the Santa Cruz Mountains by Stevens and Permanente creeks. It's classified as Sorrento clay loam, neutral to slightly alkaline with decent drainage.

It needs very good drainage so take care in heavy clay soil.

I killed one.

There is one example in Mountain View as a street tree, no idea how it got planted as there aren't others. But it is thriving well and obviously only gets seasonal rain for irrigation.  I suspect that someone gave it extra care as it was getting established.

There is a blooming specimen of this tree in my neighborhood at the moment, which I've often admired.  I read that it can be fairly drought tolerant.  It certainly grows well in the SF Bay Area.  I wonder if some of you have experience with this handsome tree?
