There are several different clones of MISCANTHUS sinensis. A few are:
M.s. 'Variegatus' full sized, elegant, not for urban gardens.
M.s. 'Gracillimus' large, thin leaved, single stripe, one of the nicest. Not
for urban gdns.
M.s. 'Yaku Jima' supposedly a 1/2 sized version if the real clone exists it is
rarely sold and a bunch from one nursery shows great seedling variation.
M.s. 'Nikko' a real dwarf (less than a meter) with dull flowers of a
reasonable size. Reasonable in an urban garden. Available from Greenlee
in Pomona.
IN GENERAL I HAVE FOUND MOST ATTRACTIVE, ,EASY TO GROW ORNAMENTAL GRASSES FAR
TOO LARGE FOR MY MIDSIZE SUBURBAN GDN AND HAVE DISCARDED THEM. I ONLY GROW
PENNESETUM 'Rubrum', P. orientale, some of the festucas, HELICTOTRICHON semp.,
something flat & blue from Greenlee, and HAKENACHLOA. I think this most recent
grass phase is dying as it has so many times before. Phormiums are going with
them which is too bad but reasonable. What's next? Greenlee says
"salixes" but I predict smaller old roses. the monsters are in the same
heap with the grasses.
Look homeward angels and start growing dwarf plants...or I'll tell a cautionary
tale.
