Nan:
Welcome to Santa Barbara!!
As well as the nurseries listed by Richard (which as far as I know are
wholesale only and do not encourage casual visitors) I buy most of my
natives from Chia Nursery, 6380 Via Real, in Carpinteria. Their prices and
choices are great and they sell a lot of items in four inch pots as well as
the usual gallon sizes. They propagate most of their own plants (often
under license) including a lot of Med-climate imports from Australia and
South Africa. Many of the plants on sale at the Botanic garden are donated
by them. If you are driving, they are on the mountain side of highway 101,
just at the top of the hill as you get into Carpinteria coming North from
the Rincon.
If you are into Orchids, there are several orchid nurseries at the ocean
end of South Patterson Avenue (between 101 and the ocean). Patterson is a
North-South street on the Goleta side of Santa Barbara, almost to the
airport.
Also on Patterson just on the ocean side off the freeway are the two best
Garden Centers which also carry natives from such sources as San Marcos
Growers: La Sumida Nursery, 165 South Patterson, and Katashi Nursery, 5320
Overpass Road (between La Sumida and 101).
Another place to check out is the Farmer's Market Saturday morning at Cota
and Santa Barbara Streets in downtown Santa Barbara. There are often native
and exotic plants for sale at reasonable prices.
Yet another place to view interesting local plantings is therelative new
Alice Keck Park covering the whole block between Santa Barbara, Garden,
Arrellaga, and Micheltorena Streets. This is about nine blocks inland from
the Farmer's Market.
Enjoy!
